The amazing Tribes at MOE
In September 2010 Mall of the Emirates announced the opening of their new extension, The Fashion Dome, to me it was more of a Food Dome with a nice selection of new restaurants to try. I have tried a few but by far my favourite is Tribes. I was pleased to be invited to their food tasting evening to celebrate the forthcoming South African Heritage Day later this month. I was definitely not disappointed.
We arrived at the Restuarant and I was immediately caught in up the aromas that hit you as soon as you walk in, it is the smell of steak frying from their open plan kitchen, amazing! After all the formal introductions were over and we had tried some of their mocktails, Chef presented us with a Hakuna Matata Platter, African Pie, Grilled Calamari (happy), Ugandan Fishcakes (we always order these), Tunisian Chicken Giblets and Pan-Fried Chilli Prawns (happy again). The food was beautiful though I must say Giblets are not really my thing and the Prawns could have done with a bit more chilli, but tasty regardless.
The main courses weren’t quite what I was expecting, there was Beef Tripe Stew with Beans and Tomato served with Pap, very tasty sauce didn’t try the tripe, and Pan-Fried Calve’s Liver served with Yam Mash, was very good. My husband refuses to eat any offal at all, so the liver was a rare treat for me. Chef picked up the fact he wasn’t keen and out of nowhere he was presented with a beautifully cooked fillet of steak with mash. Divine!! they know how to cook their meats at Tribes.
A superb platter of desserts appeared, there was Melk Tert with Raspberry Coulis, Warm Date and Pistachio Sponge, with Pistachio Ice Cream, Chocolate Malva Pudding with Madagascar vanilla sauce and Apricot Compote , Coffee Crumble, Poached pear, chocolate & hazelnuts, topped with coffee crumble mix, served with hazelnut ice-cream.
I have said it before and I will say it again, it isn’t just the food that makes a superb dining experience, it is the staff too. One of the best things about Tribes is their wonderful team of staff who come together to entertain us with live African music, a real dining experience, and hard to believe it’s in a Shopping Mall!!
Tribes can be found on the Ground Floor of Fashion Dome at Mall of the Emirates. They will be celebrating South African Heritage week from 21st to 27th of September with their special dishes. Pop in on the 24th for a rather special experience. They are also on Facebook and have a website (currently being updated). You can find more photographs from last night on my Facebook page. Thank you for inviting us
